“I was referred to Dr Marrs by another patient of his and asked my doctor to do a referral. I had severe knee pain. Dr. Marrs had a CT scan performed and told me I needed injections that would take 3 weeks, a shot per week. His Nurse told me that they also offer a one shot. As I live so far away from Rapid City, I opted for the one shot. Yes it hurt, but the relief has lasted about 4 to 5 months. I have done therapy since the shots were taken and hope to make it to the six month period, as I can get another shot. I have started to have some minor pain, but am busy with calving cows. I was able to see and be one of Dr. Peg Chilvers first patients when she arrived at the clinic. My husband and I recently celebrated a 55th wedding anniversary and vow renewal and I was concerned about the ability to walk down the aisle at the ceremony. Dr. Chilvers did a cortisone injection before the ceremony which allowed me to walk freely on my own, without my walker, and then return to her office for the surgery. “It was in 2010 after the loss of my youngest son that I finally made an appointment to see Dr. Marrs. At that appointment, Dr. Marrs, after examination and X-rays, explained to me that in my future I would be looking at hip replacement. He said that I would know when it was time. He was right as it was about two years later that I couldn't take the pain any longer as it had gotten steadily worse as time went by. Prior to the surgery, my husband and I attended a viewing of a video on hip replacement and what to expect which was very informative. The surgery went very smoothly. The first time that the nurses had me get up I was truly amazed that the actual hip pain was gone. “My history with Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center began in October, 1999. I live in Hot Springs, SD. A horse kicked me and injured my foot. The local clinic referred me to BHOSC for treatment and my journey began. Soon after, I was having pain in my left hip and left knee and I saw Dr. Mark Harlow. My knee had already experienced considerable trauma and five surgeries since 1970. Dr. Harlow was AMAZING! He did everything in his power to prevent hip and knee replacements but they became necessary and the surgeries were completely successful in 2002 and 2006. I was even able to ride my horse again. In 2008 my right knee began to bother me. Dr. Marrs was able to postpone surgery with successful injections but I fell on that knee in 2009 and he replaced it successfully. In 2014 I fell and shattered my right humorous. Once again I was a BHOSC patient and received great care! I learned in May 2015 that I have rheumatoid arthritis which explains why I’ve had so many joint problems. I’m now 61 years old and have switched from a horse to a 4-wheeler. I love BHOSC!! “My primary doctor referred me to the Orthopedic and Spine Center after having tried other avenues to help relieve my hip pain.  I was welcomed and received excellent care from my first appointment through my total hip replacement surgery and onward through physical therapy.  Dr. Marrs and his assistants were very forthcoming and honest when explaining the procedure and recovery.  I attended the surgical centers information program, which I highly recommend to all who are considering replacement surgery.  I should say that I took a leap of Faith when my primary doctor recommended Dr. Marrs.  I wanted to meet with the surgeon who would preform my surgery, I wanted to ask questions, speak eye-ball to eye-ball with my doctor.  From the first meeting I found Dr. Marrs to be personable and knowledgeable.  I came away feeling that I was in good hands.  Now over a year later I am back on my two feet.  Yeah!  I have some stiffness from time to time.  No pain, no pain pills, and I can golf again.   Just give their center a try, ask questions, meet your doctor and take that leap of Faith that God has given these people the finest of skills to help all of us who experience joint problems. ”

When shots quit working, I discussed total knee replacement with Dr. Marrs.  In 2011 I had the surgery with excellent results and would do it again in a minute. In fact, I talked to a gal a couple weeks ago who went to see Dr. Marrs because of what I had shared with her: how happy I was that I did it, that you have to take P.T. seriously for the best results.
