Dr. Stuart Fromm, knee and shoulder surgeon at Black Hills Orthopedic & Spine Center, recently completed a two-day disaster response training course while attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
Developed by SOMOS and co-sponsored by the AAOC, OTA and POSNA, the course focuses on preparing physicians to assist in response for crises across the globe. With this additional training and certification, Dr. Fromm joins a select registry of orthopedic surgeons that may be called upon to assist during disaster relief efforts throughout the United States and other countries.
Dr. Fromm may assist in the following ways:
- Primary response – Dr. Fromm will arrive at the crisis location immediately to stabilize the situation and begin treating injuries.
- Secondary response – Dr. Fromm will arrive at the crisis location up to a month following the disaster to deal with complications, including infections and injuries related to the rescue efforts.
- Tertiary response – Dr. Fromm will assist with definitive fixation and repair of injuries.
